1. The advantages of aluminum alloy frame

(1) Make a light-weight frame

Aluminum is light in specific gravity but not hard enough, so it is alloyed and heat treated for strength. The heat treatment adopts the aging precipitation enhancement method, which, in short, forms a substance in the metal that hinders the deformation of the metal. When heat treatment is carried out at a certain high temperature, it will cause aging precipitation, and if the frame has not undergone this procedure, it will also cause normal temperature aging. That is to say, the frame will gradually become stronger when placed in the room. Many aluminum alloy frames are made of 6061T6 material. The T6 mark indicates heat treatment and aging. Without heat treatment, the strength can only reach 1/2 or 1/5. Bicycle parts with the 7075 logo are not strictly heat treated. That is to say, because there is no aging, it is normal temperature aging. Alloy 7075 is inherently necessary for heat treatment, and its strength can be increased by a factor of 5 through heat treatment. In addition, 7005 alloy is also commonly used to make frames. Its strength is not as strong as 7075, but it can also be aged sufficiently at room temperature. This material can also be processed into thin stock with Padded. Aluminum itself is a metal that is easily corroded. There is almost no aluminum that has not been oxidized in the air. When placed in the air, it is immediately oxidized to form a very thin oxide film. Why not rust? The reason is to prevent further rusting when the oxide film reaches a certain level. The oxide film is almost colorless, so changes in appearance (sometimes whitish) are not easily seen.

2. Disadvantages of aluminum alloy frame

(1) Aluminum is a material with low elastic modulus and rigidity. Therefore, use thick pipes, or change the shape such as cross-over pipes, padded pipes, etc.

(2) Heat treatment is required

Heat treatment is necessary, otherwise the strength is not enough. Therefore, the general small-scale factories are unable to purchase heat treatment equipment. Especially the 6000 series aluminum alloy pipes. All manufacturers of heat treatment indicators are regarded as confidential. This also results in a variety of hardnesses.
