Product Features

1. Forging characteristics

The forming technology of magnesium alloy is basically the same as that of aluminum alloy, but it also has the following characteristics:

●It has a large friction coefficient at high temperature, low fluidity and high adhesion, and it is difficult to fill deep vertical blind holes. Therefore, the radius of inner and outer corners and the thickness of ribs of the forging die are larger than those of aluminum alloys;

●In most cases, magnesium alloy forging billets are extruded bars, which can be homogenized before extrusion to reduce the anisotropy of mechanical properties of forgings;

●For forging magnesium alloys, not only should the temperature of the workpiece be strictly controlled, but also the temperature of the mold should be controlled, otherwise the workpiece and the mold at room temperature will cause surface cracks due to chilling;

●The forging properties of magnesium alloys are very sensitive to the deformation speed, and their plasticity decreases significantly with the increase of the deformation speed. Therefore, forgings with complex shapes need to be formed by multiple fires, and the forging temperature should be lowered successively to avoid grain growth.


2. Forgeability

Not all wrought magnesium alloys can be made into forgings.

Generally, the forging temperature of magnesium alloys is about 55°C below the solidus, and the die temperature is 30°C to 40°C lower than the forging temperature. Due to the low forging temperature of magnesium alloys, it can be manufactured with low alloyed die steels. The forging pressure required for different materials to be compressed by 10% at the corresponding forging temperature is shown in Table 2. It can be seen from the listed data: the forging pressure of AZ31B magnesium alloy is larger than that of carbon steel, alloy structural steel, and aluminum alloy, but smaller than that of stainless steel. Therefore, magnesium alloy forgings need to be forged for many times, but the shape of forgings can still be forged. For example, helicopter forging rings and racing wheels, this forging not only has better mechanical properties than aluminum alloys, but also is 35% lighter than aluminum alloy wheels.


Post Casting Process

1. Heat treatment: annealing, carbonization, tempering, quenching, normalizing, surface tempering
