S31600 Powder Metallurgy Pressed Parts
S31600 powder metallurgy pressed parts have excellent high-temperature tensile, creep, and stress rupture strength. In addition, it has excellent formability and weldability. S31600 is the high-carbon version of S31603 and is subject to sensitization; therefore, unlike 316L, heavy welded sections of grade 316 may require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance.

Production Process
• S31600
Excellent work hardening (non-magnetic). Equipment used in seawater, chemical, dye, paper, oxalic acid, fertilizer and other production equipment; photography, food industry, coastal area facilities, ropes, CD rods, bolts, nuts.
• Mechanical properties
Tensile strength (Mpa) 620 MIN
Yield strength (Mpa) 310 MIN
Elongation (%) 30 MIN
Area reduction (%) 40 MIN
• The density of 316 stainless steel is 8.03 g/cm3, which is generally used for austenitic stainless steel
• What is UNS S31600?
S31600 is a molybdenum grade defined in the UNS system, following UNS S30400, in importance in austenitic stainless steels. Molybdenum provides S31600 enhanced corrosion resistance compared to SUS 304, especially more resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting corrosion in chloride environments.
• What is ASTM A240 / A240M?
UNS S31600 is also identified as Class 316 in the standard. It is the American material standard for standard specifications for chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip for pressure vessels and general applications.
• Why is S31600 called grade 316 stainless steel?
When a material grade is specified as stainless steel, it means it contains chromium, but the grade contains molybdenum which sets it apart. S31600 is a UNS designation alloy, also known as Alloy 316 in SAE designation and defined in ASTM A240 standard.
• Chemical composition of S31600 steel:
The chemical composition of this grade is as follows:
The maximum percentage of carbon (C) is 0.08%.
The maximum percentage of manganese (Mn) is 2.0 %.
The maximum percentage of phosphorus (P) is 0.045 %.
The maximum percentage of sulfur (S) is 0.03 %.
The minimum percentage for Chromium is 16.0 % and the maximum percentage for Chromium is 18.0 %.
The minimum percentage of nickel is 0 % and the maximum percentage is 14.0 %.
The maximum percentage of silicon (Si) is 0.75 %.
Molybdenum (Mo) has a maximum percentage of 3.0% and a minimum of 2.0%.
What remains is iron (Fe) percentage and few negligible impurities.
Mechanical Properties of S31600 Steel: Following are some mechanical properties of 420 steel:
The tensile strength of 316 alloy steel is expressed in Newtons per millimeter and must be at least 520 N/mm2 (MPa).
The elongation of S31600 steel varies with the heat treatment process and thickness, but it is usually expressed as 40%.
The S31600 can be welded by all fusion and resistance methods. But it cannot be welded by the oxyacetylene welding method.
The maximum Brinell hardness is around 217.
Corrosion resistance is higher than other known austenitic grades.
