Alloy tool steel, referred to as alloy steel, is a type of steel formed by adding alloying elements to carbon tool steel. Among them, synthetic steel includes: steel for measuring tools and cutting tools, steel for impact-resistant tools, cold work mold steel, hot work mold steel, non-magnetic mold steel, and plastic mold steel. SKD5 is hot work die steel.
KD5 hot work die steel is a commonly used die-casting die steel. It has high strength and hardness, good resistance to cold and hot fatigue, and good hardenability, but its toughness and plasticity are poor. It is suitable for making punches and concave dies that are not affected by impact loads under high temperatures and high stress, such as die-casting dies, hot extrusion dies, precision forging dies, non-ferrous metal forming dies, etc.

- Melting point: 1400-1420°C
- Density: 7.85 g/cm³
- Hardness: HB 230-280
- Thermal expansion coefficient: 11.5x10^(-6)/°C (20-100°C)
- Thermal conductivity: 25-35 W/(m·K)
- Tensile strength: not less than 750 MPa
- Yield strength: not less than 520 MPa
- Elongation: not less than 14%
- Fracture toughness: not less than 45 J/cm²
- Magnetic: non-magnetic
Heat Treatment
- Solution treatment: Keep at 1010-1040°C for 1 hour, then cool to about 500°C at an appropriate rate.
- Simple tempering: Within the maximum tempering temperature range of various hardnesses, gradually increase the temperature from 500°C to the maximum tempering temperature, keep it warm for 1 hour, and then cool to room temperature.
- High temperature tempering: insulation in the temperature range of 350-550°C, the time is determined according to specific requirements.
Application Areas
SKD5 is often used to manufacture high-demand die-casting molds, especially for aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys. Its excellent performance makes it widely used in the mold manufacturing industry. In addition, SKD5 can also be used to manufacture cutting tools, planer blades, and impact tools.
SKD5 is a high-quality die-casting mold steel with excellent wear resistance, heat resistance, and impact resistance. The choice of chemical composition and heat treatment process can be tailored to specific application needs. SKD5 shows excellent performance in manufacturing die-casting molds, cutting tools, etc., so it is widely used in related industries.
