The success of tungsten alloy powder injection molding (PIM) is mainly measured from the following two aspects:

① product quality (including dimensional accuracy and stability of material properties);

② compatibility of PIM binder with the environment. Although PIM technology has been developed for decades, due to the use of a large number of organic binders and fine powders, its process is much more complicated than the traditional P/M process. There are still some problems in PIM, such as dimensional accuracy control of the final sintered product, pores and cracks generated during degreasing, collapse, deformation and bending generated during liquid phase sintering, non-uniform fluidity during injection, and non-uniform shrinkage during sintering. Among them, the control of product dimensional accuracy and physical properties has not been fully solved, especially for high-density alloys. The performance of high-density alloys is very sensitive to impurities and microstructures, and pores and porosity are very important. On the one hand, defects such as large pores generated during the removal process are difficult to make up for by sintering. Large pores and high residual porosity (porosity>1.0%) are very harmful to performance; on the other hand, the collapse deformation during liquid phase sintering makes it difficult to form parts with complex shapes close to the net shape. All of these have severely restricted and hindered the development of PIM. The reason is mainly related to the PIM process.

 

From powder, binder, feeding, injection molding to degreasing and sintering, all affect the development of PIM process and product quality. If proper process control is not adopted, the deviation of blank weight can reach ±10%, causing uneven sintering shrinkage and inconsistent final size. Each process link is closely linked to another, and the problems in the previous link cannot be made up by the next process. Powder factors, binders, degreasing and sintering are key factors affecting PIM. For injection molding of high-density alloys, degreasing and sintering are more important.

Powder factor: Powder factor is an important factor affecting PIM. Powder affects the performance of feeding, the speed of degreasing, and the deformation and sintering behavior during the degreasing process.
