Metal Injection Molding Titanium Alloy Food Knife MIM Parts
The service conditions need to be considered comprehensively to measure the performance. New enthusiasts who have just entered the knife circle often focus on indicators such as hardness/strength, while ignoring other performance indicators. The biggest problem with titanium alloy as a knife material comes from the elastic modulus.

Titanium Alloy Knives Have Not Become Mainstream For The Following Reasons:
1. The performance is weaker than that of steel knives
The service conditions need to be considered comprehensively to measure the performance. New enthusiasts who have just entered the knife circle often focus on indicators such as hardness/strength, while ignoring other performance indicators. The biggest problem with titanium alloy as a knife material comes from the elastic modulus. The elastic modulus of titanium is 106.4 GPa at room temperature, which is 57% of steel. The elastic modulus represents the ability of the material to resist elastic deformation. This low value means that titanium alloy knives are prone to violent shaking during the production process, affecting the performance of knife skills. In addition, titanium alloys are weaker than structural steels in terms of hardness and wear resistance. Titanium alloys are not easy to grind, giving people the illusion of wear resistance. In fact, titanium alloys do not have good wear resistance and are prone to adhesive wear. After playing with it for a while, the scratches on the mirror surface caused trouble for obsessive-compulsive knife enthusiasts.
The biggest obstacle for titanium alloys as knife materials is the problem of strength and toughness matching.
In the process of making steel knives, manual forging is a common process, which optimizes the microstructure inside the knife and improves strength and toughness. More importantly, steel has a unique strengthening and toughening property - martensitic phase transformation. After heating to the complete austenitization temperature, the steel is quickly cooled to room temperature, resulting in a non-equilibrium solid phase transformation (carbon atoms are difficult to achieve effective migration, forming a non-diffusion phase transformation). After quenching, the steel has high strength and hardness but insufficient toughness. The tempering process is to transform martensite into tempered martensite, which forms a good strength and toughness match. In addition, the martensitic phase transformation process can be controlled by other means. For example, before quenching a Japanese sword, special clay is applied to the back of the blade. During quenching, the cooling rate of the area covered by clay is slower than the critical value, resulting in no martensite forming on the back of the blade. This forms a good combination of blade/back strength and toughness. In fact, the Japanese sword is straight before quenching. After quenching, the martensitic phase transformation volume of the blade expands, which causes the blade to bend. Of course, the tool itself forms a bimetallic structure during the forging process, which is also difficult to achieve in the production of titanium alloy tools, so I won't go into details here.
On the other hand, although α-type and α+β-type titanium alloys have allotropic phase transitions and have the basis for producing martensitic phase transitions, due to the absence of a migration mechanism similar to carbon in steel, the toughness decreases and the strength does not necessarily increase. Therefore, this restricts the performance of titanium alloy tools.
2. Difficult processing and high manufacturing cost
The reserves of titanium on the earth are not small, and the high cost is due to its difficulty in processing. Titanium itself is very active, and its room temperature corrosion resistance is due to the formation of an oxide film. It is easy to absorb oxygen and nitrogen during high-temperature processing. Generally, vacuum equipment is involved. In addition, titanium alloy grinding is difficult. This is obviously not compatible with traditional tool processing procedures (forging, heat treatment, grinding). If you insist on using titanium alloy to make knives, the manufacturing cost will skyrocket, and the performance may not be very good. If you have money and willfulness, you want more expensive ones instead of better ones. Why not use gold or silver to make it? The cost is mainly reflected in the raw materials, and the processing loss is not high. In addition to being cool, it can also resist inflation. Do you want to know?
3. Potential corrosion problems
Titanium alloy itself is very corrosion-resistant. But the problem lies here. Because it is difficult to make a knife from head to toe with one material. Once titanium comes into contact with other metals such as aluminum and steel, there is a risk of galvanic corrosion. A titanium alloy sword made at a high cost was found to have lost its handle, guard and scabbard after being collected by enthusiasts for many years.
The above are the general reasons why titanium alloy knives have not become mainstream. Of course, titanium alloy knives have the characteristics of lightweight, paramagnetism or antimagnetism, and the ability to form a beautiful oxide film, which still has the meaning of existence
