1.4404 Powder Metallurgy Pressed Parts

1.4404 is a low-carbon grade of 1.4401 steel. It shows good acid resistance. It is not prone to carbide precipitation at grain boundaries and is therefore not affected by sensitization. It is mainly used for welded parts thicker than 0.2 inches. The austenitic microstructure also gives these stainless steel grades strong toughness at cryogenic temperatures down to absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius).

What is 1.4404 stainless steel?

1.4404 is a low-carbon grade of 1.4401 steel. It shows good acid resistance. It is not prone to carbide precipitation at grain boundaries and is therefore not affected by sensitization. It is mainly used for welded parts thicker than 0.2 inches. The austenitic microstructure also gives these stainless steel grades strong toughness at cryogenic temperatures down to absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius).

1.4404, also known as 316L stainless steel, has a lower carbon content than its family grade 1.4401 steel. Although 1.4404 has a lower carbon content, it is very similar to 1.4401 in most commercial and industrial applications. Importantly, the two related grades also cost almost the same and both last a long time, 1.4404 powder metallurgy pressed parts are incredibly corrosion resistant and are an excellent choice for stress-centered uses. In contrast, 1.4404 is an excellent choice for consumption that requires a lot of welding, as 1.4404 is less prone to welding attenuation.

Is 1.4404 stainless steel magnetic?

It is an austenitic material and therefore a non-martensitic stainless steel. Its properties are non-magnetic

In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strength σb (MPa) of 1.4404 should not be less than 480, the conditional yield strength σ0.2 (MPa) should not be less than 177, the elongation δ5 (%) should not be less than 40, and the section shrinkage Rate ψ (%) should not be less than 60. Hardness should not exceed 187HB, 90HRB, or 200HV. The density of 1.4404 is 7.98g/cm3, the specific heat ratio (20°C) is 0.502J/(gK), and the thermal conductivity (W/(mK)) is also different at different temperatures.

In terms of heat treatment, the solid solution temperature of 1.4404 is 1010-1150°C, which requires rapid cooling. Its metallographic structure is characterized by austenitic stainless steel.
