Golf Head Titanium Castings Explained

1. Titanium castings

The most widely used cast titanium alloy is the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It has the best casting process performance, stable structure and performance, and has good strength and fracture toughness below 350 °C. It can replace stainless steel in aviation, chemical and other fields.

Titanium castings are mostly used in vacuum condensing furnaces and graphite castings. Compared with the deformed alloys of the same composition, their strengths are basically the same, but the plasticity and fatigue properties are about 40% to 50% lower, and the fracture toughness is slightly better. Most titanium castings are stabilized and annealed. The solution treatment and hydrogenation treatment under study can refine the alloy casting structure and increase its fatigue strength to the level of forgings.

2. Hot isostatic pressing

Hot isostatic pressing is an important processing procedure for high-quality titanium alloy castings. After hot isostatic pressing, the size of the casting will not change, but its internal structure will be densified, and the stability of mechanical properties will be greatly improved.

3. Application

The operating temperature of cast titanium alloys is generally 300 to 400 °C. Generally, it is prepared by vacuum condensing furnace and graphite casting method. It is mainly used for casting non-rotating parts such as aero-engine casings, supporting beams, guide vanes, etc., and can also be used for casting rotating parts such as impellers.

4. Casting

It refers to the liquid forming process of metal materials. The molten metal is poured, injected or sucked into the mold cavity, and after solidification, it becomes a casting with certain shape and properties. The characteristics of casting are that the metal can be formed at one time, the process flexibility is large, almost all castings of various compositions, shapes and weights can be adapted, and the cost is low. The casting method is divided into sand casting and special casting, which can be selected according to the alloy type, size, batch and quality requirements of the casting. Mechanized and automated equipment can be used in mass production.

Due to the high chemical activity of titanium and titanium alloys, they are prone to violent chemical reactions with N, O, and N in the air, and are prone to chemical reactions with refractory materials commonly used in casting. The casting of titanium and titanium alloys, especially the investment casting, is much more difficult than the investment casting of aluminum and steel, and requires special means to achieve. In the early stage of the development of titanium casting, because the development of the casting process lags behind the pressure processing process, the medium-strength titanium alloys with certain deformation, such as TiΟ6AlΟ4V, TiΟ5AlΟ2.5Sn, etc., are first selected as the casting alloy materials. These alloys are still widely used today. However, with the development of the titanium casting process and the improvement of the performance requirements of various aspects of the cast titanium alloy in the application field, as well as the increase of the complexity of the casting structure, the argument that "all deformed titanium alloys are suitable for casting alloys" in the past should be corrected. With the increase of the use temperature and working strength of the alloy, the number and amount of added elements in the alloy also increase accordingly, but at the same time, the casting properties of the alloy, the crystalline structure in the fluidity and solidification interval, the mechanical properties, etc. must be considered, that is, the alloy's The chemical composition must be adjusted according to the requirements of the casting process.

Post Casting Process

1. Heat treatment: annealing, carbonization, tempering, quenching, normalizing, surface tempering

2. Processing equipment: CNC, WEDM, lathe, milling machine, drilling machine, grinder, etc.;

3. Surface treatment: powder spraying, chrome plating, painting, sandblasting, nickel plating, galvanizing, blackening, polishing, bluing, etc.
