Investment Casting is usually made of investment molding materials (materials with low melting point, such as wax, etc.) to form a mold, and then several layers of refractory materials are coated on the surface of the mold. After hardening, drying and curing, the mold is heated to melt out the mold to form a hollow shell, and metal liquid is poured after sintering at high temperature.
Due to the high dimensional accuracy and surface finish of the castings obtained, investment casting is also known as "investment precision casting".
At the same time, because the investment material is usually wax-based material, it is also called "Lost Wax Casting".
Investment casting is an advanced near-net forming process that can produce precision, complex castings of various alloys that are close to the final shape and size of the part, and can be used directly or with little machining.

Investment casting process

 

Investment casting consists of six main processes
Wax molding -> Tree formation -> Shell making -> dewaxing and roasting -> smelting and pouring -> sand clearing and cutting to get the finished product.
1.1 Wax molding
Wax molding, is to press the wax material into the mold cavity, cooling out to form a wax mold.

1.2 Group Tree

To build a tree, multiple wax molds are welded to the pouring system.

1.3 Shell Making

Shell making, is first dipped on the surface of the wax mold with a good silica sol coating, and then sprinkle refractory sand, the shell is dried and hardened under specific temperature and humidity, so that a dense refractory coating is formed on the surface of the wax mold, and then repeat the process 5-6 times, and finally formed with a certain strength and refractoriness of silica sol shell.

1.4 Dewaxing and roasting

Dewaxing is the wax inside the shell through high-temperature steam to melt the wax out, so that you can get a cavity mold shell that can be cast.

Shell roasting is mainly to burn the residual wax and water in the mold shell, while precision casting is cast in the red shell state, usually the mold shell is roasted at about 1000 degrees for 1-2 hours.

1.5 Smelting and pouring

According to the material composition of the product, and then molten steel melting, slag spectrum test, the composition can be poured after qualified. It is necessary to pour molten steel into the mold shell in strict accordance with the requirements of the process card in the red shell state to gradually form a blank.

1.6 Sand cleaning, cutting to get the finished product

After the blank obtained after pouring is fully cooled, the mold shell is separated from the blank using a manual (hammer) or vibration sheller, and then the casting is cut and separated from the pouring system to obtain the finished casting.

Subsequent polishing, machining and other processes can be carried out accordingtodemand.
